Reading
‘A book is a gift you can open again and again’ – Garrison Keillor
We regularly read quality texts aloud to children as it contributes greatly to their love of learning and we would recommend that parents and carers continue to do so too, even after their children become independent readers.
See the below documents for more details on how we promote love for reading, our book-based curriculum and our Reading Scheme.
We follow the letters and sounds phonics programme in Early Years and KS1, which provides a systematic programme for teaching early phonics development. Letters and Sounds is divided into six phases, each phase building on the skills and knowledge of previous learning. Alongside this, we take elements of the Read Write Inc reading scheme to enhance phonics, linking each sound to a rhyme. Our reading scheme supports and builds upon the children's growing phonic knowledge. For more information, see the reading scheme above.
A child’s understanding of a text forms a large part of children’s enjoyment in reading. Please see the document below for ideas on how to question your child whilst reading.
Reading Buddies
In year 5, children may be chosen as reading buddies. These children are given a responsibility to read with children in EYFS and KS1. Please see the attached link below for more information regarding this.
