Our Intent
At St Michael and All Angels Primary School we make Physical Education an enjoyable learning experience. Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to gain key skills in physical education. Through the teaching of these key skills, children have a good foundation and are equipped with the skills and knowledge that they can then apply to a variety of different sports in different contexts.
We encourage children to participate in a variety of different sports through their time at St Michaels in which we aim to build the confidence of all children. We have a variety of taster days, extra-curricular sport clubs, intra-school and inter-school competitions that all children can engage with. Children have their say in the after-school clubs they would like to participate in and we try our best to cater for all different interests. We aim for children to leave St Michaels with the skills and confidence so children feel able to take part in a variety of different sports. We have a focus on encouraging a lifelong love of sport, whatever sport it might be.
In EYFS, adults provide opportunities for children to develop their Gross Motor skills and demonstrate strength, balance, and coordination when playing. Children learn to negotiate space and obstacles safely with consideration for themselves and others. Children are encouraged to move energetically in a range of ways such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing,
As children progress through school they gain key skills and apply these in different sports. Children develop reflective skills and are able to evaluate their performance and the performance of others. We also teach the children how to work with others children in a team.
We aim to improve health and fitness in the school through PE lessons, physical activity in lesson time and break times, extra-curricular clubs and through active travel.

PE Skills Progression
Bikeability
Every year, children in Year 4 take part in their Level 1 Bikeability training to teach them how to cycle safely and competently in a fun, engaging environment.
At Level 1 Riders:
- Prepare themselves for a journey
- Check the cycle is ready for a journey
- Set off, pedal, slow down and stop
- Pedal (including looking behind, cycling one handed, turning and controlling speed)
In Years 5 and 6 children take part in their Level 2 Bikeability. This aims to further develop riders’ skills and confidence for cycling on single-lane roads and simple junctions and prepares riders for cycling on more complex, often busier roads. Riders must have fully demonstrated Bikeability Level 1 National Standard assessment criteria before they start Bikeability Level 2 training.
At Level 2 Riders:
- Cycle safely and responsibly
- Identify and respond to hazards
- Start and stop on-road journeys
- Maintain suitable riding positions
- Share the road with others and communicate with other road users
- Comply with signals, signs and road markings
- Manage risk when cycling
- Negotiate junctions (pass side roads, turn at T junctions, and crossroads and roundabouts if present).

Sports day
Well done to everyone for taking part in sports day! All the staff were really proud of the resilience, confidence and compassion shown by all the children. Well done to Bede for coming first in sports day!
Clubs
Last year we had a wide range of clubs. Children shared their views on the clubs they would like and we tried to include as many of these as possible. Some of these clubs included football, netball, cross country, badminton and dance.
Please let school know any clubs you are interested in for this year. We will try our best to accommodate as many as possible!
In Autumn 1 we will have a cross country club, a tag rugby club and a badminton club.
Judo Sessions
As a lot of children said they wanted to try Judo, Judo Excellence came to teach Years 1-6. We all really enjoyed the sessions. After the tasters sessions we started an after school Judo club with Judo Excellence.
Football
Year 5 and 6 have enjoyed taking part in a football league with local schools. We are looking forward to taking part in more matches this year!
Reception and Year 1 have enjoyed an afterschool football club
Well done to the Year 5 and 6 boys who took part in the Calderdale Football League Finals!
Cross Country Club
Our cross country club trains at school and also goes running in Shelf woods. This year we have taken part in local and national competitions.
Netball
Year 3 and 4 children are enjoying their after-school netball club.
Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
In February Year 5 went to Winmarleigh Hall where they took part in lots of different outdoor activities both individually and in a team. Here are a few pictures of some of the activities they did.
Ingleborough Hall
As part of our Outdoor and Adventurous activities Year 6 enjoyed a residential trip to Ingleborough Hall. They enjoyed climbing, caving, gorge scrambling and walking up Ingleborough.
