What Does French Look Like at St Michael & All Angels?
At St Michael's, we want every child to develop a love of languages and an appreciation of the rich cultures and traditions that make our world so diverse. Through engaging and interactive lessons, children develop the confidence to communicate in another language whilst broadening their understanding of life beyond their own experiences.
Our French curriculum is carefully designed to reflect our vision of 🔍 Curious Minds, 💪 Resilient Learners and ❤️ Compassionate Community. We encourage children to embrace new challenges, take risks in their learning and develop the confidence to communicate with others. Through learning a foreign language, pupils gain a greater understanding of different cultures and develop respect for the beliefs, traditions and experiences of people around the world.
Through the Grammarsaurus French Scheme, children in Key Stage 2 follow a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum that builds upon prior learning and provides regular opportunities to revisit and strengthen knowledge. Pupils develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, enabling them to communicate with increasing confidence and accuracy as they progress through school.
Songs, rhymes and interactive activities play an important role in helping children remember and apply new vocabulary. Rather than simply learning isolated words, pupils are encouraged to use their language skills in meaningful contexts through conversation, reading, writing and listening activities.
Alongside language acquisition, children develop cultural awareness by learning about everyday life in France, including traditions, festivals, food, geography and important landmarks. These experiences help pupils gain a wider understanding of the world and encourage curiosity about different countries and cultures.
By the end of Year 6, we aim for pupils to communicate confidently in French, demonstrating their ability to listen, speak, read and write while developing the transferable skills needed for future language learning.
From Key Stage 2 onwards, we nurture curious minds and resilient learners, inspiring children to become confident communicators who are ready to engage with the wider world.
