PE

⚽ What Does Physical Education Look Like at St Michael & All Angels?
At St Michael's, we want every child to develop a love of physical activity and the confidence to participate in a wide range of sports and physical challenges. Through high-quality teaching and exciting sporting opportunities, children build the skills, knowledge and determination needed to lead healthy, active lives.
Our PE curriculum is carefully designed to reflect our vision. We encourage children to challenge themselves, show perseverance, develop teamwork and celebrate both individual and collective success. Through PE, pupils learn the importance of resilience, sportsmanship, respect and cooperation whilst developing a positive attitude towards physical activity.
Through a carefully planned progression of skills, children develop competence and confidence across a broad range of physical activities. They learn fundamental movement skills, refine sport-specific techniques and apply their knowledge in different contexts. As they progress through school, pupils are encouraged to evaluate their own performance, set personal goals and work collaboratively as part of a team.
🏃 In the Early Years, children begin their physical development journey by building gross motor skills, strength, balance and coordination. Through play and exploration, they learn to move safely and confidently by running, jumping, climbing, hopping, skipping, dancing and negotiating space with consideration for themselves and others.
🏅 Beyond curriculum lessons, we provide a wide range of opportunities for children to engage in sport through extra-curricular clubs, sporting festivals, taster days, intra-school competitions and inter-school events. We actively seek pupil voice when planning clubs and strive to offer activities that cater for a broad range of interests and abilities.
🚴 We are passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles and physical wellbeing across our school community. Through PE lessons, active learning, playtimes, sporting enrichment opportunities and active travel initiatives, we encourage children to develop lifelong habits that support both their physical and mental health.
From Early Years through to Year 6, we nurture curious minds and resilient learners, inspiring children to develop the confidence, skills and enthusiasm to remain active throughout their lives.

PE Skills Progression
Bikeability
Every year, children in Year 5 take part in their Level 1 Bikeability training to teach them how to cycle safely and competently in a fun, engaging environment.
At Level 1 Riders:
- Prepare themselves for a journey
- Check the cycle is ready for a journey
- Set off, pedal, slow down and stop
- Pedal (including looking behind, cycling one handed, turning and controlling speed)
In Years 5 and 6 children take part in their Level 2 Bikeability. This aims to further develop riders’ skills and confidence for cycling on single-lane roads and simple junctions and prepares riders for cycling on more complex, often busier roads. Riders must have fully demonstrated Bikeability Level 1 National Standard assessment criteria before they start Bikeability Level 2 training.
At Level 2 Riders:
- Cycle safely and responsibly
- Identify and respond to hazards
- Start and stop on-road journeys
- Maintain suitable riding positions
- Share the road with others and communicate with other road users
- Comply with signals, signs and road markings
- Manage risk when cycling
- Negotiate junctions (pass side roads, turn at T junctions, and crossroads and roundabouts if present).
