🏛️ What Does History Look Like at St Michael & All Angels?
At St Michael's, we want every child to develop a fascination with the past and an understanding of how history has shaped the world we live in today. Through engaging, enquiry-based learning, children explore significant events, people and civilisations, developing the knowledge and skills needed to become thoughtful and reflective historians.
Our history curriculum is carefully designed to reflect our vision of 🔍 Curious Minds, 💪 Resilient Learners and ❤️ Compassionate Community. We encourage pupils to ask questions, investigate evidence and think critically about the past, helping them develop a deeper understanding of their own identity, the experiences of others and the world around them.
Through a carefully planned progression of knowledge and skills, children gain a coherent understanding of Britain's history alongside that of the wider world. They learn about the complexity of people's lives, the diversity of societies, the process of change over time and the relationships between different cultures and communities. As they progress through school, pupils build upon prior learning, developing their ability to analyse sources, draw conclusions and communicate their understanding with confidence.
In the Early Years, children begin their historical journey by exploring the lives of people around them and learning about their roles within society. Through stories, discussion and first-hand experiences, they develop an understanding of the past, recognising similarities and differences between life today and life in the past.
Throughout their time at St Michael's, children are encouraged to become history detectives, using evidence, enquiry and curiosity to uncover the stories that have shaped our local community, our nation and the wider world.
