🌍 What Does Geography Look Like at St Michael & All Angels?
At St Michael's, we want every child to develop a fascination with the world around them and a curiosity that inspires them to explore beyond their own experiences. Through engaging and meaningful learning opportunities, children gain a deeper understanding of places, people, environments and cultures, helping them make sense of the world in which they live.
Our geography curriculum is carefully designed to reflect our vision. We encourage pupils to ask thoughtful questions about the world, develop an appreciation of diverse communities and cultures, and understand their role as responsible global citizens.
Through a carefully planned progression of knowledge and skills, children develop a secure understanding of both their local area and the wider world. They learn essential geographical skills, including map reading and drawing, directional and locational knowledge, fieldwork techniques and the interpretation of a range of geographical information. Through place studies, outdoor learning, fieldwork and the use of technology, pupils explore how people and environments are connected and how our world continues to change.
In the Early Years, children begin their geographical journey by exploring their immediate environment through observation, stories, maps and non-fiction texts. They learn about similarities and differences between their own lives and those of people in other countries, helping them develop an awareness of the wider world from an early age.
As children progress through school, they are encouraged to think critically about current events and global issues, developing the confidence to ask questions, form opinions and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
From Early Years through to Year 6, we nurture curious minds and resilient learners, inspiring children to become knowledgeable, respectful and compassionate citizens of an increasingly interconnected world.
