🎨 What Does Art & Design Look Like at St Michael & All Angels?
At St Michael's, we want every child to develop creativity, imagination and confidence through Art & Design. We believe that art provides children with a powerful way to express their thoughts, feelings and ideas, whilst inspiring them to explore the world around them through different forms of creativity.
Our Art & Design curriculum is carefully designed to reflect our vision. We encourage children to experiment, take creative risks and embrace challenges, developing the resilience and confidence needed to express themselves through a wide range of artistic mediums.
Through a carefully planned progression of knowledge and skills, pupils explore drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, textiles and mixed media. Children study the work of a diverse range of artists, designers and craftspeople, using these influences to inspire and inform their own creative work. As they progress through school, pupils learn to develop ideas, refine techniques and evaluate their creations, helping them grow as reflective and independent artists.
In the Early Years, children begin their artistic journey through exploration and play. They are encouraged to safely experiment with a wide range of materials, tools and techniques, exploring colour, texture, pattern, form and design. Through art, music, movement, role play and creative activities, children learn to express their thoughts, ideas and emotions in imaginative ways.
From Year 1 to Year 6, pupils engage in a range of exciting Art & Design projects that involve researching artists, practising artistic techniques, developing creative ideas and producing their own unique pieces of work. Children are encouraged to take pride in their work, celebrate individuality and understand that creativity flourishes through practice, perseverance and experimentation.
Through Art & Design, pupils learn to appreciate creativity in all its forms and develop the confidence to turn their imagination into reality. We aspire for every child to leave St Michael's with a love of art, an appreciation of artistic expression and the skills to continue their creative journey beyond primary school.
From Early Years through to Year 6, we nurture curious minds and resilient learners, inspiring children to become creative, reflective and confident artists.
