Design and Technology

🛠️ What Does Design Technology Look Like at St Michael & All Angels?
At St Michael's, we want every child to become a creative thinker, confident designer and resilient problem solver. Through exciting, hands-on learning experiences, children are encouraged to design, make, evaluate and improve products with a real purpose, developing practical skills that they can apply both now and in the future.
Our Design Technology curriculum is carefully designed to reflect our vision. We encourage children to explore ideas, take risks, embrace challenges and learn from mistakes, developing the confidence and perseverance needed to solve real-life problems.
Through a carefully planned progression of knowledge and skills, pupils learn how products are designed, made and improved. Children investigate existing products, research user needs, generate creative ideas and develop the technical skills required to bring their designs to life. They then evaluate their work thoughtfully, considering how it could be improved and refined.
In the Early Years, children begin their design journey through purposeful play and exploration. Adults provide a wide range of opportunities for children to build, construct, create and solve problems across all areas of learning, helping them develop the foundations they need for future Design Technology learning.
⚙️ From Year 1 to Year 6, pupils take part in carefully planned Design Technology units that develop skills across the key areas of:
✅ Design
✅ Make
✅ Evaluate
✅ Technical Knowledge
✅ Cooking & Nutrition
Alongside designing and making products, children also learn about healthy eating, nutrition and food preparation, helping them understand how Design Technology impacts everyday life.
Through creative challenges, practical problem-solving and opportunities to innovate, pupils develop the skills, confidence and adaptability needed to succeed in an ever-changing world.
From Early Years through to Year 6, we nurture curious minds and resilient learners, inspiring children to become inventive, resourceful and reflective designers who are ready to tackle challenges with confidence and creativity.
