🎵 What Does Music Look Like at St Michael & All Angels?
At St Michael's, we want every child to develop a love of music and the confidence to express themselves through singing, performing, composing and listening. Through engaging and inspiring musical experiences, children discover the joy of music whilst developing creativity, confidence and a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
Our music curriculum is carefully designed to reflect our vision. We encourage children to explore a wide range of musical styles and traditions, nurturing their curiosity whilst developing the resilience to practise, perform and improve.
Using the Sing Up music programme, pupils build their musical knowledge and skills progressively from Early Years through to Year 6. Children learn to sing with confidence, recognise rhythm, pulse and pitch, listen and respond to different genres of music, and develop an understanding of how music can communicate feelings, emotions and stories.
In the Early Years, children begin their musical journey through nursery rhymes, singing, movement and play. These experiences help develop confidence, coordination, listening skills and a love of music from an early age.
As children move through school, they learn to work collaboratively, compose their own music and perform for a variety of audiences. Through these experiences, pupils develop concentration, creativity, teamwork and self-belief.
We are proud that every child has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument for a year through specialist teaching from Calderdale Music. Children learn to read music, develop instrumental techniques and perform as part of an ensemble, building skills that will stay with them for years to come.
From Early Years through to Year 6, we nurture curious minds and resilient learners, inspiring children to develop a lifelong love of music and the confidence to share their talents with others.
