🧮 What Does Maths Look Like at St Michael & All Angels?

At St Michael's, we want every child to develop a love of mathematics and the confidence to see themselves as successful mathematicians. Through engaging, high-quality teaching and a mastery approach, children build strong fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills whilst learning to persevere, think critically and embrace challenge.

Our maths curriculum is carefully designed to help children make connections, deepen their understanding and apply their learning in a range of meaningful contexts. From Early Years through to Year 6, we nurture curious minds and resilient learners, equipping every child with the skills they need for the next stage of their education and beyond.

Below, you can explore our Maths in a Nutshell overview, which provides a snapshot of how mathematics is taught across St Michael & All Angels and the journey our children take to become confident, capable mathematicians.

🔢⚡ Building Fluency in Mathematics

At St Michael & All Angels, we know that confidence in maths begins with rapid recall and mental fluency. The quicker and more accurately children can recall key number facts, the easier it becomes for them to tackle more complex mathematical concepts and problem-solving activities.

To support this, we use a range of engaging programmes that help children develop speed, accuracy and confidence in their mathematical thinking.

🎸 Times Table Rock Stars

From Year 2 onwards, children use Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) as part of their homework and classroom learning.

Times Table Rock Stars is a fun, motivating and highly effective programme designed to help children master their multiplication and division facts. To become a true Times Table Rock Star, children aim to answer any multiplication question up to 12 × 12 in under three seconds!

Through regular practice, children build confidence, improve recall speed and develop the fluency needed to succeed across all areas of mathematics.

🪄 Maths Magicians

As children become ready, they can begin their journey through our Maths Magicians programme.

Maths Magicians encourages children to practise key number facts at home and develop rapid, accurate recall. When a child feels confident, they can ask their class teacher to assess them.

To pass a level, children must demonstrate quick and accurate recall of the required facts. Successful mathematicians are awarded a certificate during Celebration Worship, and then progress to the next challenge level.

This programme is a fantastic way of celebrating mathematical achievement while encouraging resilience, perseverance and a love of learning.

📚 White Rose Maths

Throughout school, we use White Rose Maths to support and enrich our mathematics curriculum.

White Rose provides high-quality resources that help children develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through careful progression, reasoning and problem-solving opportunities.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families can also access a range of free resources, including parent workbooks, to support learning at home.
